What consumer trackers actually measure

Wrist and ring devices do not measure brain activity. They infer sleep from movement, heart rate, heart-rate variability and sometimes temperature and blood oxygen estimates. Algorithms then translate those signals into stages. That inference is reasonable for detecting whether you were asleep, and much weaker for deciding which stage you were in.

Where accuracy is decent

Most modern devices are reasonably good at estimating total sleep time and bedtime consistency, and they can flag broad trends: later bedtimes across a busy month, worse recovery after alcohol, more awakenings during a stressful period. Those trends are where the practical value lies.

Where accuracy is weak

Stage breakdowns — how many minutes of deep or REM sleep you had — should be treated as estimates. Validation studies against polysomnography generally show moderate agreement at best, especially for distinguishing light from deep sleep. A single night's stage chart is not a clinical result and should not drive decisions.

Blood oxygen features and apnea

Some devices estimate overnight oxygen variation and may flag possible breathing disturbances. These features can be a useful prompt to seek evaluation, but they do not diagnose sleep apnea. Diagnosis requires a home sleep apnea test or in-lab study ordered by a clinician.

Orthosomnia: when tracking makes sleep worse

Clinicians have described a pattern where anxiety about achieving a perfect sleep score itself causes insomnia. If you find yourself checking the app before you have fully woken, feeling worse after a poor score, or changing plans because of a number, take a break from tracking for a few weeks. How you feel and function is the more valid outcome.

Using data well

Look at weekly and monthly averages rather than individual nights. Pick one variable to work on at a time — bedtime consistency is usually the highest-yield. Run simple experiments: two weeks with no alcohol, or a fixed wake time, and compare averages. Pair the device with a short subjective diary, which captures what the sensor cannot.
