How Light Exposure Helps Regulate Your Sleep-Wake Schedule

Light is the master timing cue

Specialised photoreceptors in the retina signal directly to the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the brain's central clock. Timing determines direction: light early in your biological morning shifts the clock earlier, light late in the evening shifts it later.

Screens matter mostly as a source of light and stimulation late at night. Reducing brightness, increasing distance and finishing stimulating content earlier addresses most of the effect. Room lighting is often the bigger contributor than the phone itself.
